I have personally bred Red-bellied piranhas many times and they have always used my artificial plants (nylon mops placed together as a mat on top of the gravel) for spawning. They always perferred this over using the gravel itself although I've read that many hobbyists have had them breed in the gravel.

But here is my question:

Has anyone had their Red-bellies place their eggs on a large single rock or the bare tank bottom itself?

Thanks guys!

I havent tried to breed them myselft, but I would guess a flat piece of slate wouldent hurt/ Just an idea/

I have had eggs in my tank before . YES , They were on a fake plant and a larger rock ........
But I have seen photos with them in gravel .

my plants..real or not get clipped off short by the breedin pairs and they usually do the egg laying rite on the gravel, but sometimes they dig too much and then the eggs end up on the bare glass bottom
but on a rock like cichlids..never.
