I'm here in so-cal, and in the past year iv'e noticed for sale, in a couple of local f/s. Usually in the 3-6inch range, a true gar for sale, of hybrid genes. (maybe shortnose/florida gar). And it is sold under the common name of Marbled Gar. It sales from $15-30 bux. niether f/s could answer exactly which two gar sp. are involved. Any answers... thanx in advance:confused:

it's most probably a florida/spotted gar with varied patterns...but as mentioned, pics would help claify things immediatly

99.5% of the time "marbled gar" is a trade name for a Pike-characin in the Genus Boulengrerella... THESE ARE NOT GAR.... They are tetras (sort of.. as it depends on your definition of inclusion as a tetra).. The 0.5% error mark is for retarded LFS that just call fish whatever...

Common names do not equate a relationship to animals.. Boulengrerella are not anything like Lepisosteids (Genus: Lepisosteus, Atractosteus) and have little to nothing in common with them. Just like if they where called "marbled pike" they have no relation or anything in common with Esox (Northern pike, Musky, etc.) species...

definitely agree and this is very likely the case. also keep in mind that (true) gars (members of Lepisosteidae) are illegal in california--
