I'm looking at getting sugar substrate for a SW set up that i wish to house a jawfish and a sleeper goby. I've read that sugar substrate only denitrifies for 1" of depth however the jaw fish requires 4" deep sand bed... will this be a problem i want sugar sized (1.2-.5mm i think) to the sleeper goby can easily sift thru it.

i have sugar sand (oolite) and my jaw is fine in it

deeper sand is anaerobic so it actually converts nitrates into nitrogen gass, this is why deep sand beds are recommended

yeah sand can be as deep as you want it. I deally 5-6 inch is sweet for a DSB but too deep and your just wasting room in the tank.

unless it's something like snake eels or garden eels, where's it requisite..

but yeah like 6-7 in is the most i've seen in non-specialized tanks
