A quiet filter?

Aquaclears IMO are the best and most quiet HOB filter when they are working properly. Although I love them, I have found the the impellers become loose more than other filters and can start to hit, making some really annoying sounds. Also sand messes up AC's fast. They havent had that annoyin "hum" that my marineland filters have.
 
Eheim, you'll never regret it, I own 4 of them, 3 of which have been running none stop between 9-12 years, as quiet today as when new.

Yes they are pricey, but you'll just buy once and they'll last forever, problem free.
 
Cascade canister. Have had mine for 6-7 years havent replaced a dam thing on it yet. Dont even hear it running, ever.
 
I had the same filter, and was fighting noise/not perfect water. Dumped it as part of a deal selling a 30g on craigslist, and grabbed an AC110. Lifechanger, and my water was crystal clear afterwards. The sponge makes a huge difference over the filter pads in the emperor.
