So last week, I picked up a rio 800 powerhead for a bit of extra circulation and while it did move the water pretty good, it was "omg" loud!!

I don't know if the fish cares, but I do, so yesterday, I took it back and got it replaced.
When I came home, I placed it in the tank and plugged it in.... and... a lot of foul words escaped my mouth!!
It was just as bad as the old one...

So no more rio for me!

Any good, quiet powerheads out there?

That's odd, I have a Rio 600gph that I keep in my water aging barrel and it's completely silent. I also have two of the Rio 20HF's (~1300-1400gph) for my 220 setup with 55gal sump. I don't actually have it set up yet but I have tested the pumps by draining my 220 with them and they are also very quiet.

Did you try pulling out the impeller shaft and seeing if they where scratched. I know it is new but it could have been a bad impeller I would start with pulling it apart and see if you can find something wrong

Was it motor hum, or the unit vibrating against the glass? For the latter, I put a small sponge between the motor and the glass to quiet the vibration.

Yeah, I did check the impeller for damage and whatnot and it's free from any defects.

If you take the impeller out and spin it with your finger, it feels and sounds notchy...
