there is this red devil at my lfs and it has thick lips and i was wondering if midas cichlids can have thick lips. or are thick lips a instent ID for the red devil A. lab.

cuz i think red devils are good looking fish with the hump then the pointed snout but man i think midas cichlids with the flat faces are so uuuugggllly so i want to make sure ima get that red devil snout

There is Amphilophus labiatus, a variation of "red Devil", in some circles the thick lipped variety is very coveted.
I believe the common name red devil, is a catchall for the Amphilophus clad of cichlids from the Lakes of Nicaragua.

I'm guessing that if it's in a tank at the LFS it's not a pure bred Labiatus (Red Devil). If you're looking for the fleshy lips *cough*... you might want to go thru a breeder/vendor on here or thru a referral. I'd suggest (and not necessarily in this order) Jeff Rapps, Dan (cichlidsoftheamericas.com), Gage/cichlid connection, Fishfarm... to say a few.

no i mean the one im looking at has fleshy lips so i was wondering if midas have fleshy lips also because if they dont then i can get this red devil and be sure its pure and it is a deep red unlike most i see has fleshy lips and all and a nice size hump.

If you like the fish buy it, but the puffy lips only indicate that it is at least part RD not that it is pure. If pure is importan,t then you will have to buy where you can get history of the fish.

just read the sticky it answers all your questions. Just because it shows fleshy lips does not mean it is pure. Since it is at a lfs you must consider it a hybrid. there is no way to just eyeball a red devil or midas and know which it is. unless bought froma a reputable vendor it must be considered a hybrid.
