Seeing as how my clan is over 90% female, I was wondering if anyone had some male bichir shots they would mind showing off. I've never seen a male Ornate... or a male Endi... or a male Lap... Or weeksii or or or... The only males I've seen are Sens, P. Polli, and P. Buettekoferi.

Soooo... is sexing bichirs similar to some other species(i.e. cichlids) where the female will have shorter, rounder fins and the males longer and more pointed?
no...for all bichirs and ropefish, males have wider and more muscular anal fin when they start to become sexually mature. this means there are no reliable ways to tell when the fish are still juvies. At what size would a delhezi and an ornat.(and other upper jaws) become sexually mature? How about lower jaws?

In my experience... I've got a pair of male sens that hit maturity at 7'' (about a year or a bit more) and a male p. polli hit maturity at 8''. But at the same time I've got another pair of male sens that are only a little over 5'' and they're swimmin around flexin their pecs too! (HAAA!)
Thanks for the pix so far everyone! I was starting to question that I couldn't sex bichirs after all but now I see I'm right... I really DO only have 6 males lol
How bout ornate?? I've got 3 females, and I've seen loads at my LFS - ALL female.
