the rock...671!!!
came home from work...first thing i noticed was that my 8in. silver was missing, franticly i searched the floor, thinking he had somehow managed to jump out, but found nothing...then i saw him, lodged behing a peice of drift wood, next to my 7in TSN...one of his eyes was cloudy, he was dead!!! (ph 6.8, nitrite .5ppm, nitrate 40ppm, water is 150ppm slightly hard) he had a very healthy appetite and was raised on a diet of sliced lake smelt gutloaded with hikari/azoo 9-1 food sticks, bloodworms, krill, and MP. his tankmates were all smaller then him (GT 4in, O4in, and TSN 7in) and never bullied him, however the O and GT went at each other every now and then. do my water specs look off to any of you? did a 25% water change every week, i'm thinking nitrite...damn...he didn't show any of the signs though, checked under his gills and they don't look enflamed. such a sad day. only had him for 4 weeks but he put on almost 1 1/2in. he was my favorite fish...such a sad day.

sorry to here that. its happened to me witha gar i had. best thing to do is start again

Sorry for your loss dude. We all know what it feels like to lose a fish, it is a sad day.

Are you sure you have the nitrite and nitrate numbers correct? Nitrates should be 0. Fish can usually take with no problems a few nitrites in the water. Could you have had an ammonia spike or something? Any kids around? I once came home from work and found that my wife's cousin's 4 year old and poured an entire bottle of dishwasher soap into my aquarium. None survived. I wanted so much to throw him in there as well. Chances are that's not what happened to you, but if you have small children running around, it's a possibility. I would do a 50% water change and vacuum the substrate out well. Just to make sure the other fish won't fall prey to whatever killed the aro. Again, sorry for your loss.

Nitrites are bad, and low amounts of nitrates ARE NEEDED to maintain a tank. Seems to be your tank isn't fully cycled due to the nitrite reading. Sucks, and i wish you the best.

Sorry to hear that.
I also have a silver that is about 11'' and is my favorite fish. I would be sad
if I found him dead.
All you can do is get another one and watch him grow. As for the current
fish in the tank, whenever a fish dies in my tank, I do a huge water change
to try to clean everything out as good as possible.

Good luck.

yeah, i agree about the nitrites. i've lost many fish over the years to this killer. but .5ppm isn't very high, most test kits i have still have it as within tolorence. then again, young aro's/even old aro's are very sensitive to nitrite. usually keep them down using chems. the tank has been active and supporting fish for over 8 months ( 20gal powerfeed tank, i used it to get my new additions up to speed before moving them to my other tanks) nitrates usually don't harm fish unless their readings are very high. but yeah, thanks for all you info guys. i'm pretty sure it was the nitrites, just can't believe that he was that sensitive to such a low parameter. just got finished doing a 50% water change, just in case... i'm not throwing out the children factor, i lost a p.bass due to my 4yr old cousin pouring an entire bag of bio gold into my tank. i lock my door when i'm at work, since the incident. but didn't today, but the kids weren't around today, i think. again, thanks for all the input...and i am going to go at it again (soon as i can save up another $60)

Sorry for your loss!! To the next!! :D

Something to consider; your arowana was startled by outside or inside stimuli and he hit the sides or top of aquarium. I've lost arowanas, arapimas, catfish, cichlids, 6" pink tailed chelcus, etc that way the past 40 years.

Jeff

Sorry to hear bro.
