I started a reef tank about nine years ago. 20 gal tall, compact flourescent light, deep sandbed, live rock, lots of soft and a few stonies, protein skimmer and powerheads. It was pretty self sustaining, as long as you dosed weekly, did a monthly waterchange, and topped it off every week. It was a thing of beuty for years. I moved, and gave it to my brother. He set it up in his basement. About six months ago, he asked me if I wanted it back. I should have taken him up on the offer.......
Right now the corals are all dead. The powerheads are gone, and the protein skimmer pump froze up. He let half of the water evaporate out of the tank. He said it was too cold to run his ro/di unit to make new water. He never cleaned out the powerheads, or the skimmer. Never. He's had it for 6 years now. So, now I'm going to get it as soon as I can, and recover what I may. The outlook is not to good. I'm thinking that after it's set up again, and stable, I'm probably gonna have to get some more live rock, and live sand, and reseed the beast. Hopefully i'll get some good hitchhikers on the live rock. Unfortunately, I'm not sure where to get that stuff around here anymore, I'll probably have to drive all the way to baltimore to get anything decent.
What a sad end to a glorious nanoreef.
