Yep, 15 - 35 bucks is usually the norm for "farmed" savannah monitors. I've always liked them because they're stockier than most other varanids but man do they drop some smelly mess when they get big. :D Also, if you look at some herp rescues you can usually find these guys, they're starting to go the way of the green iguana.
 
I don't know about you guys... but I prefer the Odatria monitors over the Varanus ones.

However I agree that instead of buying one, you can probably get one from another person for free on a forum or from a resue center for a small fee.
