A seemingly stupid question

Ok in all of my tanks I never have to clean up after it because of a whole natural thing going on. I now have an fimbriated moray eel. He is about a 10 inches to a foot long. I never have cared for something that can cause physical harm since he has some big nasty looking teeth. I now find myself worrying that when time comes to siphon waste out of the tank that I will get bitten. The only reason I am worried is that he is still 1/3 his size and is in a 30 gallon tank. (he will be moved to a bigger tank this summer when he will be big enough)
I am worried since its a close proximity to him or her that I may get bitten easily. How should I go about cleaning the tank? It sounds like a stupid question but its one I can't find an answer to anywhere.
Thanks,

Custom Python. Long & small diameter tube will give you the same or better suction than the original 3" version. Get like a 1 1/2" or 2" long clear pipe and make a custom python to gravel vac and clean the substrate. GL

I face the same perils everytime I do any syphoning. I have a Marine Predator system full of fish that are waiting to either Bite me, or sting me.
I use a lenght of ordinary garden hose, straped to a plastic rod, long enough to reach the substrate. That way I avoid placing my hands/arms into the water.
