For the past few days, I've been trying to feed my ornate bichir with Hikari carnivore sinking pellets but it doesn't seem to like it much. So, I threw in a cube of frozen bloodworms and it ate a little only. It'll only take the sinking pellet if I drop the pellet right before it's mouth, so I'm having a pretty rough time getting it to eat. It's kinda unstable, going crazy when I turn on the filter by swimming up and down non-stop until I turn it off. Instead of staying at the bottom, it likes floating at the top - a rather unusual behavior for a bichir. Any recommendations what I should do?

''Instead of staying at the bottom, it likes floating at the top - a rather unusual behavior for a bichir. '' OK one last time since

Turn the filter on and leave it alone quit with the ons and offs your stressin the bichir

put the food in and leave it alone it will find it and eat

Any recommendations what I should do? RELAX and quit fussing over it like an old lady

 TRUE THAT!

Seriously though Ornate, read through the stickies in this forum, they are there to help first timers such as yourself.

Had you read them, you would know that floating is very very normal for bichirs, especially new ones that are stressed from the filter being turned on and off.

Leave the filter on, it's keeping your tank habitable ;)

And be very patient with changing their diet. They wont eat for a while. Don't feed it for a week, then drop in half of a carnivore pellet and see if it's ready.

ornate seem to swim up and down more then some other bichir like endli.. Try feeding them at night when the light are off.. with the filter issue, just leave it on and they well get use to it after a while.

bichirs i find are very easy to care for! hardy and never fussy, i have had many, i still have many and collecting more lol

mine eat a mixture of shrimp, beef heart and massivore pellets. In fact, my delhezi started competing with midswimmers and now fee off the top. i thought they were blind - but they seem to find the food at the top!!

turn and leave filte ron
put sinking carnivore in, these are formulated to smell good for these fish!
leave it there, over night if you hve to, and turn the lights off
you will find next morning, it snot there anymore, and its in the belly !
