Tank is a 150g currently using a FX5 and an XP3. I want to turn my XP3 into more of a water polisher and find a 3rd power efficient filter to take on as the 2nd filter on the tank.

I was thinking of grabbing another FX5, but was wondering what else would fit the bill? Thinking if I had a few filters to watch for (watch sells, craigslist, ebay, etc.) for instead of just one (only searching for the FX5 atm) then I could find something sooner rather then later.

Pretty much any of the Eheim's are good. I just recently picked up a couple of 2217's, and I'm already in love. I've ordered a 2215 for another tank, and I'll probably pick up a couple more 2217's.

They're simple to set up, relatively cheap at about $150, and very energy efficient.

IMO xp3 would be much better for biofiltration and the fx5 for mech. xp3s have a nice media capacity, but are low flow to me. fx5 turns over alot more water and can help with bio aswell. I run both also and it seems to be optimal for me. AC110s can be cheap addons for great mech filtration aswell.

I have my FX5 stuffed with bio balls and ceramic rings at the moment. I want to move my XP3 as a polisher as I have an inline heater and because of the low flow it's a nice candidate to put an inline UV on it as well. So looking to find another canister that can move/filter some water with good flow that's power efficient.

Can't do HOBs too easily because I have a 3D background - canisters are NP though.

Get an eheim canister. It's energy efficient. For mechanical you can use emp or ac110.

I would ditch your bioballs and get some seachem pond patrix for better filtration overall, bioballs just aren't optimal for the fx5

Just looked up exactly what I bought for the FX5 which is Fluval Biomax Bio Rings and Coralife Bio Balls. I have zero issues switching out media, just want to get this third filter sorted out first.

sump socks.

while socks are great at removing fine particles, usually the problem is that the overflow only takes water off the top of the tank. missing most of the heavy wastes created by big fish. even blowing a powerhead won't make all the waste hit the overflow. I like to use sumps for mainly bio and other HOBs/canisters to do the heavy mech job.
