I know that there are a lot of ways to soften water such as : collecting rain water, RO/DI filters, peat...... but what about dead pine needles?:nilly: I have no idea if this could or could not work so all you chemists, biologists, and simply more experienced people out there, please chime in. The basic idea seems ok, I use pine needles when I landscape (personally, not professionally;) ) with various plants like azealeas (sp?) that require acidic soil. So how about water???? Hmmmmmmm.....

I know that pine sap is toxic to fish because of some of the resins in it. I'm not sure how much (if any) is in the needles, but I would be cautious.

I thought of that, but how much sap is in dead pine needles? They are dried out right? I'm sure that there are traces left but how much? And at what concentration is the sap toxic?

While we're waiting for answers, fill a 5g bucket 1/3 full and fill with hot Dechlor'd water, stir occasionally and test water @ 12hrs / 24hrs / 36hrs / 48hrs. and tell us what you get. Check the smell & taste (a half drop on your tongue won't hurt you (as kid's we more dort than that:D)).

Definatly run some tests on your own. My buddy isn't the fastest when it comes to a responce that takes resurch. His initial reaction was "to much crap in them but I'll see what I can find out". (back burner) I do know however that if you bought him some beers the resurch would go faster.....LOL
