I have 10 mbuna's between 1.5 and 2.5 inches. I just picked up a little .75 inch electric yellow, and added him to general population. He went through the ritual of every fish putting it in its place when he was added to the tank, then spent the next 3 days hiding in some rocks, and i thought the other fish got him while i slept, but its still there. I dont think it has eaten very much, and am considering letting it grow out in my guppy tank. Is this a good idea? right now he is smaller than my smallest guppy, so this seems like the place for him to grow out to about 2 inches before sending him back for another hazing. Should i leave it with my cichlids where bad things may happen, or let him grow with the guppies? Since guppies can live in just about any water, i keep my water the same in both tanks. Cichlids tank is a 55 and guppy is a 20 if that matters.

thanks
dave

Well at 3 days hes still getting used to the new tank, feed flake food so he can get some when it floats by the rocks hes hiding in. Where did you get a .75" yellow lab? seems very small for someone to be selling them. Also what mbuna stock do you have in the tank?

now that i look at him more it is probably an inch maybe. Smallest i ever bought for sure. I got it at petsmart in the mixed tank, but i am pretty sure its not a hybrid, but who knows i dont plan on mucking up any lines breeding and selling so no biggie. i got a mess of a setup right now. aka no planing when i started. I got a bumble bee, 2 kenyi, 2 albino red top zebras, a hongi, a white top hara, a yellow tail acei, i know these arent mbunas but a blue dolphin, and a yellow banded torpheus. looking to rehome bumble bee 2 kenyi the tropheus and maybe the blue dolphin.

IMO you should up the numbers of your yellow labs and acei to around 6-7 of each, they look better and just seem happier in a group. As far as the kenyi go they are quite mean and i have never be able to keep them with my labs, numbers is the key to keeping africans, the more you have of one kind the better they get along in the tank so not just one guy get picked on all the time.

That seems like a lot of fish for a 55 gal. I forgot to mention i also have two syno's and they will be upped by at least 3.

I ended up netting it and putting it in with the guppies. Seems much happier. It has eaten and swims with the guppies and is always out now. I think at least for a couple months it will be best for it.

I hope you are not very fond of your guppies. I would bet that within one month you will start to notice missing fins :headbang2

Well, not that i dont like the guppies, I do, but they are guppies, there will be 1000 of them in six months if i dont do some serious culling. But either way, as soon as its a inch and a half its going back with the cichlids. I got 2 females for every male guppy but they will all be knocked up and the males will probably nip each others fins anyway.
