Hey all, been a while since I have been on here, obtaining a couple of male trimac, sourced from Jeff Rapps in a couple of days, does any one have any general advice they can give me at all?

I have kept big cichlids before, such as Synspilum, Black belts, Midas etc, but I know each sp. have different personalities and behavioural traits, so any advice from people who have / do keep these fish would be much appreciated.

Tehy are only 4-5" at the moment, going to keep them in separate tanks and grow them up.

Thanks all.

Not really anything specific or unique to Trimacs than any other Amphilophus species you’ve kept. They are not overly susceptible to any particular maladies. Regular water changes and good general maintenance practices. My loved Krill, night crawlers, Massivore and NLS. I kept the tank right around 80 I used a PFS substrate, but they dig like crazy so don’t be surprised to see 50 lbs of sand piled up against the front of the tank. A few pieces of driftwood or rock are good for décor but they will rearrange the tank to their liking. Lighting doesn’t need to be anything special just not too bright. That’s about all I can think of. GL

Thanks for your response, sounds like its going to be fun!

IT will be a blast I am sure, they are my favorite Amph. species ,but for some reason are very undreated...

My favorit fish!
Very responsive, beautiful coloring.
Rapps has excellent stock.

I was reducing the number of tanks and put 5 bronze cory cats in with my male trimac. The next morning he had eaten 4 and the 5th was stuck in his mouth. It tore up his intestines and he quit eating. I tried various treatments but ended up euthenizing him. I have another now that looks great. He is with a very large rafael cat and a male convict with plenty of small caves. Trimacs do not play well with others. They love crickets, super worms, earth worms, chopped up shrimp, krill, Hikari large floating pellets, massivore. Temp is 80 degrees, PH 7, Weekly water changes 50%, A lot of filtration with circulation at the top.

Enjoy!

Trimacs are cool my favorite fish in my tank, i have a female (was sold to me as a Male flowerhorn) but later found out i had a female trimac. now my mission is to find a male trimac for her, after i get my 220 gallon in a few months, good luck with yours.

trimacs are awesome and Rapps has some of the best. Nothing special really you need to know if you've already kept Midas so just give them lots of space and lots of water changes to see the best growth and you'll soon have some awesome monsters on your hands. :)
