i understand the pump at the end of sumps pushing water back into the main tank. but what is used to take the water from the main tank evenly without having the sump fill up too much or too little? how is water taken to the sump from the main tank?

are there any other options rather than a hole at the bottom of the main tank with a tap? (like i have seen)

I want to build a sump but its a whole new world to me lol.

some info from experienced sump builders would be great.

pics would help too. looked at a lot of diy's and just wanna know the answer to the above^^^

If you look at a DIY overflow, HOB overflow, Durso standpipe, or a tank where the back is drilled, they all do the same thing. They return water to the sump. The name "overflow" should be taken literally. They only flow as much water as the pump returns. If the pump is rated at 1000gph, an overflow (of any type) will only flow the amount of water that is pumped back into the tank. If the power fails, the overflow stops flowing water because none is being put back into the main tank. The most important thing is to make sure you overflow will flow more than your pump. They can't take more water out than what is returned.

When the water level goes above the return, gravity feeds that water back down to the sump. Once you set it up and see how it works first hand, you'll be surprised on how simple it really is. The best way to learn is to see one in action. Go to your LFS or find a friend who has a wet/dry system, and study it.

yes that is a tricky question but once you take a look at some one elses then ull see it first hand dude
