Last night when I went to bed I checked all my tanks as usual every tank was fine all fish were fine. Late last night around 2:00am I went out to my kitchen for a drink of water...on the way is my living room where my dovii tank 240 gallons is located . I glance over and see the female dead on her side resting on the tile....I was so upset. When I went to bed she had eaten and was doing fine....these dovii were raised together...they paired naturally. They NEVER fought. They had spawned before and she was ready to lay again any second. No visual signs of fighting. Ammonia 0ppm nitrate 0-20ish ppm (closer to 0ppm) nitrite 0ppm. I am hitting myself in the head because I didn't hang on to any fry from the first batch( assumed I would have far more to choose from in the future) now I am without a female. My male is now Very VERY skittish and scrambles when I even get near the tank. Such a sad day.....one fish gone another left with a complete personality change.....I'm guessing I can never expect him to be the wet pet he was before ever again? I don't know....

Sorry to see this, myself included quite a few of us have sustained some heavy losses so far this year.
It may take some time but perhaps your male would settle down and come to accept a replacement suitably sized female.

I am very sorry to hear that.... did you check for any electric leakages... was the lights on in the tank... did she strike herself to any of the decor in your tank( if you have any).... do you have any insects or bugs flying around , which might have dropped into the tank and by mistake eaten by her.
Get him a potential mate... dont worry ... my male was very kind to 3 females I had introduced....he is a gentleman.

I hope he does come around....he isn't that big yet .....probably 9 inches. The female was a solid 7 inches (I froze her I don't know if that's creepy....not ready to let her go I guess)

Poor guy

No decor no electrical issues. Male is still fine. Just a freak occurance I'm guessing. All parameters are good 0ppm on everything except tiny bit of nitrates....I do 50% water changes every 3 days. (I know crazy)

No,freezing her is not creepy,at least not as far as we MFKers are concerned as a few here have done it lol.I had my first armatus in my freezer for months until it just vanished.I suspect that the wife's cousin ate it.

Sorry for your loss. Whats nuts is same thing happened to my female flowerhorn yest. The male was super nice with her everything went well she had her tube dropped and her breeding dress. I come home and is in her "escape zone" which is a small pot she can only fit. She was badly beaten.

When these type of fish breed aggressive cichlids fatalities are common.

Did she jump outta the tank? Or does your 240 have a tile bottom--inside the tank?

Sad news, perhaps something spooked her and she hit the glass hard, hard bang to the head can end anything....
