I used to buy fresh seafood to feed my sharks and eels. However I have now just discovered that I may have inadvertently killed some of my beloved sea critters because of fresh seafood.

What I learned is that the place I used to buy all the raw fresh smelt and shrimp that I was using for feeding had started using a new spray disinfectant that is food safe (For humans) so they are able to clean the counters and glass of the seafood display case without fear of contaminating the fresh food. However, the 'safe for humans' logo is unfortunately just that and I am pretty sure that my live stock was slowly poisoned with this disinfectant. A little overspray here and there adds up.

I am currently nursing a Brazilian Dragon moray back to heath after watching his health slide prior to this discovery.

Only frozen & bagged from now on for me.

Thanks for the heads up, never considered that.

Thnx for sharing.

Hope your Moray heals up soon!

Were they the ones that won you POTM???

i dont mean to offend to any country but if you guy see frozen shrimp bag and it is from china or Vietnam, don't buy it. I have heard from my relative in Vietnam that they use some kind of chemical to clean the food before they bag. those chemical will keep the food look fresh longer than it used to be.

Has anyone heard anything from Thailand? The shrimp in the supermarket I go to brings in shrimp from there.

Well look like it's safe from thailand. I haven't heard any problem from Thai yet. Just only China and Vietnam.

That's why I peel the shell/exoskeleton off, after I wash them thoroughly...

You know that they're from VN anyway, right? Just the packing says from Thailand :naughty:

I would have thought so, but apparantly not. I usually just ran it under water for a little while just before putting it away in the freezer. I guess either I wasn't thourough enough or it doesn't rinse of very well.

Again I cannot prove this as it's just a theory. also the store didn't want to tell me about the cleaner/disenfectant other than it was a food safe cleaner. I suspect it something either similar or exactally like
Clorox® Anywhere® Hard Surface™ daily sanitizing spray.
"Gentle enough to use around kids and food*
Kills 99.9% of bacteria: E. coli, Salmonella, Staphylococcus and Streptococcus.*
Leaves no harmful chemical residue"

And yes the exact eel that died was the POTM one as well as it's HDE neighbor in another tank. Devistating to say the least.
