hey guys...

i'm planning to set up a new tank. and yeap i want an abba.

need help though with possible tankmates and it's growth rate...

i;ve seen a meter long abba with a couple of Giant gouramis and a motoro in a petshop... i initially thought that was a really bad idea... but after a year, theyre sill together@_@

I've personally seen aba's SNAP without waring after living with fish for months just snap over night BUT ppl. say the same thing about Featherback knife Papyrocranus Afer's and I've got a pair of featherbacks in my tank that have been there for almost 2 yrs. with other tankmates and yes I have seen plenty of other P. Afer's the WOULD NOT under ANY circumstances live with anything at all

so honestly i think it ALL IN THE PERSONALITY OF YOUR FISH

EVERY FISH IS DIFFERENT JUST LIKE EVERY HUMAN IS DIFFERENT

we all have are own personalities

I just got a baby abba abba today. He came in a few days ago to my lfs and I let him settle there for a while. So super excited to bring him home today. I'm housing him alone in a 100 gallon tank right now...he sure does look tiny in it as he's only about 4.5", but I know that he will soon be mammoth. I have a 500 gallon custom being built right now that he will eventually go in to and yes, I know that he will eventually outgrow that tank as well...a great excuse to upgrade yet again!
The only tank mates I'm considering for him in that 500 gallon is my Saddled Bichir (who's still a baby but growing fast) and a Silver Arowana.

All others will become food I fear.

I think abas are not for tanks and they are more fitted into ponds because they're not that flexible, right?

u are in for a rough ride. aba aba are bloody agressive and and harm or kill tank mates. they grow extraordinarily large too. i helped to transfer on fella which was 4 feet long. that guy was so mean....that it'd take a large feeder goldfish and strip the whole fish of its scales and leave the thing to die. every single appliace that was in the tank got shredded, powerheads, sponge filters....that bugger was so mean...even the singapore zoo rejected him.

Never had one, but all I hear are horror stories of how vicious an Aba can be...so I'll avoid them until I feel like I have room for a single specie tank;)

indeed maybe ill try empty my koi pond and try raisin a few in there.. do they need deep water? 1 foot would do till a few feet?
