Is it ok to have live plants with cichlids? will the cichlids eat them? and wont the plants make the water too soft?

It depends on the cichlids. The word 'cichlid' covers a huge number of species from across the world. Many love to eat plants while many others don't really care.

I've found with my own tank (2 convicts and 2 africans) that there are exceptions to every rule. I have kept a few swords in my tank and the convicts could care less about the plants though they love to rearrange the gravel. Also if you have any driftwood you could look into keeping various mosses or ferns, they require very little light and maintenance.

dempseys. 4 unknown asst african species. firemouth. blue acara. tiger oscar and OB peacock

Dempseys and oscars will destroy them

Firemouths, Acara probably wont

I dont know about the Africans or OB peacock. If the Africans are vegetarians, then they will eat it probably.

most mbuna will eat/nibble at the plants, and some of the others mentioned will uproot them at least, so no is the answer

eating isnt the problem, as cichlaholics said. its uprooting, shredding, decimating, and metaphorically crapping on it thats the problem.
