i have a 55g tank set up with a nice white sand bottem i currently use a 60g topfin filter. turns out they are not made to be used in a sand bottem tank. not sure why but i burnt 3 of those suckers out inside of 3 months i would like to avoid haveing to get a $200 floor filter anyone have an recomendations for other filters with a sand bottem
thanks

well it all depends on where your intake tubes are..

i have sand in two of my tanks, and i run AC110s and some wisper filter no problem..

same here I use an Eheim 2213 in my 30 gallon with sand bottom and although some sand doees make it in there, it never gets to the motor. I paid under a hundred bucks at a lfs (Fishtown USA in NY) they have a special and you ould probaly get them to ship. Maybe a better deal on line.

Ive got fx5s in both my large sand tanks and as long as you leave a big enough gap between the sand and the intake they are fine, a little sand gets in as above but i have got geos who sift all day and still no problem
Hope this helps.

Cheers steve

I have an Fx5 with a sand bottom and no problems for me

A fluval 404 is $85 off ebay, and it will work great. In a canister, water goes through the media first, and then through the impeller. In a HOB filter, it goes through the impeller first. Canisters can't get screwed up by sand because of this.
