Ok I'm getting some rock for my 220g tank (guessing the gallons). Is a 7 ft long tank 2 ft tall and 2 ft wide. Not sumbstrate. I mean rock for cichlids to makes caves and such with. How many lbs of rock is ok and how many lbs is not ok? Or does it matter?

Several years ago there was a member of another fish forum that worked in some kind of lab that made a video where he filled a 20 tal tank (I think it was a 20) with steel balls then topped it off with water...

There is another video that can be found on youtube where a hobbyist puts a few bricks in a 10 gal then stands on the bricks.

I am very confident that an aquarium can hold it's full volume in water, rock, sand or gravel...

Be cautious not to drop the rocks on the glass or to allow to much weight to rest on a sharp point... but if placed flat on glass, feel free to add as much rock as you wish...

have a look for egg crate as it will spread the weight. you can search ebay and reef places for the heavy black version off egg crate
thats what seems to be used in saltwater tanks and they use tons of rock as there main filtration.

I'd shoot for slightly less rock than your stand can support. I suppose if you put so much rock in that it only held 10 or 20 gallons of water that would probably be unhealthy for you fish...

thanks for the reply's here's how the tank turned out!!
