hello i am a newbi in building filters and other such things. i was wondering how to build a filter for a 12' x 30".

People are always selling used working sand filters and pumps on Craigslist. IMO a used filter for a $100ish investment is worth more than a few days on a giant DIY filter project.

Massive wet/dry, sump, moving bed filters? Look at koi ponds for diy filter designs.

I would advise either a fairly large sump or working on some sort of closed loop setup using a bead filter.
