I decided I want to build a pond again. I had one, but I broke it down due to raccoon problems. Now I have some dogs to scare off the raccoons. I want to know about an above ground pond in the winter. I hear that the water can get colder compared to being in the ground and that fish may not live through the winters in these conditions. I live in SoCal in Santa Clarita and it can get pretty cold sometimes.

You can build a plywood wall along the sides and line it with foam to make better insulation. Lay the pond liner on top of that. Then build a green house tent-like thingy over it for the winter so that it's warmer than outside and have a heater going either in the filter or in the pond. Shouldn't be too hard really . . . Or have one of those air heater thingies placed within the green house tent over the pond and it'll help keep the air warm in there, heating the pond as well.

Is there any chance of having any portion of the pond below the ground in addtion to being above ground. Are you going to use a liner?
I live down in San Diego and it can get pretty hot as well
(100-104) not often but it happens.
I plan on beginning a partially above and below ground pond within 30 days.
I hope to have 2' above the ground supported by a wood frame and 2'-3' below the ground.
Try using a users name under the "search feature" from this forum. His name is "midnight" he is funny and has great ideas.
Fish on Fire's idea is right on the button. I think to clarify, he means "styrafoam". Probably 1" would be a good insulator. I can't remember the specific kind though.
Good luck!!

The whole thing will be above ground. I'm going to use a liner. The styrafoam for an insulator never crossed my mind, so now I get to incorperate that into the project. Thanks for the input guys...I really appreciate it!
