So, can I use an above tank sump and it work just as efficiently?

I currently have an under-tank sump... But there's no room for me to fit even a light under there.

I'm thinking about reconstructing my canopy, and putting my sump up there so I can have a light, and heavily populate it with plants...

Because I can't have live plants in my tanks because... Doviis :D
Or cichlids in general, so destructive.

I was gunna put my overflow box in the sump... Then have it drain into the tank... And put my pump in my tank somehow.

Ideas?

Having say a 4'x12"x12" built in acrylic rectangle in the canapy of an aquarium would be my dream, however the limitations are the weight and efficiency of that footprint when it comes to filtration, but personally id have only pothos and bio, then have a backup canister for mechanical, you sir just gave me a brilliant idea, I shall elaborate with my shoal setup, but maybe just a 4'x6"x4" instead

Anyways a lot of threads don't peak my interest but there are good ideas here, the pump loses so much gph in the head and bends so my guess is its more efficient, however the pump would be in the tank, cuz you can't siphon to the sump.

Heres my exact thoughts...

First, my tank already sits low. I built a short stand so i can roll over in bed and look directly in. Which is why i have no room for a lights under there... too hard for me to access the sump on top because its already short.

Second, my fry won't get caught in the overflow box. And hopefully i can build or construct something so the pump will be out of reach as well.

Well and of course, I can finally have plants and it can work as a biological filter better.
I kinda wanna try that duckweed stuff.

If anything, it'll actually be EASIER to clean my sump... Before I had to either drain it and pull it out, or bend my arm underneath there in the worst painful ways possible while laying on the ground next to it.

I think, it'll be for the better of everything. I may even keep fish in the sump. Like a pleco to eat the algae the plants will grow.
For the record, my tank does NOT grow any algae. Sits by a window, and has lights on timers that come on several hours a day.

No algae.

I never have scrubbed my tanks walls. Ever.

I think it's because I use a seachem product that like ruins nitrate bacteria and algae growth chances.
Cutting back on the seachem product though.

Oh 1 more thing... For the weight of you sump, just multiply 8x the number of gallons your sump carries. Because a gallon of water is like 8.(something) pounds. Add 10-30 for your sumps weight.

Not too bad, considering my 200g has like .5" or 3/4" glass. It should be able to support it.

My new canopy won't be weak. My stand definitely isn't. It has 4x4s and 6x2s for legs >.<

Some type of fine, filter box around the pump to protect your motir and fry... And it should work just as well?

A BREEDER NET/BOX!!!
GENIUS!!!

That's it! The 1 thing I couldn't find a way to protect my overflow box... I now found a safe way around it. Just poke a hole through the breeder netbox thing, and run your pumps outlet hose through it!

Like one of those.

People were telling me to put a pantyhose or a filter over my overflow box sides, so my fry don't get sucked in.
BUT, if my overflow box is in the SUMP! - No chance they could be sucked in. And if the pump is inside the breeder net/box in the tank, WITH the fry, and the fry are on the OUTSIDE of the breeder net/box... Safe.

Ohf style filter maybe? I think its efficient for biofiltration but idk for mechanical.
