Ok jus got thisn... Dont know much about baitcasters so i need you all to walk me through the bells and whistles cause it didnt come with an owners manual. There is a knob inbetween the reel housing and the handle with the star thing... It turns but idk what it does. And what does the atar thing do? And on the other side it sais max with a lil dial... I thoifht it was the drag at first but idk because i pulled on it in all positions and it doesnt seem to feel different

Yes the star is the drag. The knobby by that is to free the spool. Tighter will give you less backlash but less casting distance. Loosen it and you will have a freer spinning spool for longer casts but watch out for backlash. Practice with it and see what you like. On the other side of the reel is going to be your magnetic braking system. Or whatever type of breaking system it comes with. This serves a similar function as the free spool knob with more precise controls. Max is for windy days. Minimum or 0 is for perfect days with an experienced angler. Mine has a 0 to 10 scale and I tend to keep it on 3 to 5.

Backlash is when the spool spins too fast. The line can't keep up with it and will tangle within the spool. This is why not everyone uses bait casters. They can be a pain before some practice. Start with heavy lures.

I'd also suggest starting with cheap line, and maybe casting in your back yard for practice. You will suffer from backlash, and you will waste some line. You will get good at untangling it, then you will get good at casting. Learn to set your Spool resistance right. The way I do it is to set the line up with whatever I am using. Then I take and push the cast button. I then set the spool so that it just barely drops the lure. Hope this makes sense.

Yea good point, For starters you may want to set the resistance so the lure just stops dropping or barely drops like he said. I would start with something heavy like a rattle trap or spinner bait. Make sure you're using the specified line strength, too heavy or too light will give you problems. Normally you'll want the intermediate. like 10 or 12lb test.

FIRST THINGS FIRST watch some youtube clips. you can read text all day but if you just go by this and then go try to cast around you're gonna butcher some line. there are tricks for beginners to learn, like placing some tape about 20 yards deep on your spool so you can't backlash past that point, you're gonna wanna start with your magnetic brakes on 10 and your tension knob (the little thing near the drag star) fairly tight. That being said you're only gonna cast about 10-15 yards on this setting, but once you get comfortable with that you can start easing off the tension and then eventually bringing your magnetic brakes down. Don't get discouraged it can be frustrating at first but once you get the hang of it its like riding a bike

Ya i watched youtube but all i could find was reviews... But ya i get what ur sayin... Lay off the tention before breaks. Jus notmally i use spinners but figured id try thisn
