I know there alot of ac110 owners here. So my question is how often do you replace the filter sponge. i just replace both of my 110 after 5 months.

as long as u maintain it once every 1-2weeks...better to replace after 1 yr rather than the 5months.

I dont think you have to, only requires a cleaning and thats it. I think the only time you replace it is if they are falling apart.
thanks, I didnt know that.

i guess i wanted to replace it because all my cichla died earlier this year, and i didnt know why, so i replaced the sponges. thanks for the great info fellas.

Whenever they dont have any structure is my plan. They seem tough but I have only washed mine twice now. Its better to wait until its needed than go with manufacturer advice. They would have you change them every week if they could.
The dead cichla is a bit of a concern if thats the case you could change them but you would also have to replace your bio and substrate. Maybe be better to treat the tank as a whole...

I just rince my sponges out realy good like every month. So far so good, its been about 5 months I think.

My ac110 was salvaged from my LFS who was using it as POND FILTER! so i had to scrub off all the mud and sludge...

The Sponge is still good.. and i've washed it twice in the past 3 months.. so as long as you maintain the cleaning.. it should be fine...

I also don't use the typical AC110 cleaning substrates.. or the bio chemical filters..

I used mine with bio balls,. the sponge and a carbon filter pad.. it cuts down on the cost....

thanks, every other month i would clean my filters, i rinse the crap out of those sponges. they do hold alot of crap.

i wash the block sponge out whenever the waterflow gets restricted....
same goes for all the scrubbies i keep in it as well as the other block of sponge media...

the plastic "basket" as well as all the other media/carbon have all been replaced by sponge media of one kind or another
