My fish like to pick up mouthfuls of sand, swim across the tank and spit said sand directly into the intakes. As expected impeller shafts dont last too long. I am thinking of switching to a ceramic shaft for better wear and was wondering if anyone else has tried this and which shafts have worked or didn't work.

Thanks

I never tried those shafts, but maybe you could cover the intakes with foam, netting or pvc

I've used prefilters before with no success. Maybe the panty hose on the impeller side of the intake will work since they're finer than a sponge, I'll just have dump the intake tube frequently so that it doesn't clog.

The ceramic impeller shaft from an Eheim 2217 is a perfect fit, diameter wise. It is too long so you will need to be careful when attaching the intake tube to avoid knocking it out of the center position.

thanks, I'll order 2 so that I can try to trim 1.

I tried trimming one down and it just fractured.

The shaft will work even though it is too long, you just need to use more care when servicing the filter.

One other suggestion. If the AC110 shaft is worn, more than likely the impeller is also, so I would recommend getting a new impeller at the same time. This will ensure that the old impeller won't wobble on the ceramic shaft and potentially break it (been there and done that).

I've been using the Eheim 2217 shafts for a couple years now on 2 AC110's and am very pleased with the results.
