on my 125 i have an fx5 loaded with sponges and ceramic rings, and a 405 with carbon and sponges for mech filtration. the water is still cloudy and has a lot of small particles in it. if i put a 110 on the back and load it with polishing pads would that help? i figure the maintenance on that would be a lot easier then if i loaded up one of the canisters... any other thoughts are welcomed!

probably not. the FX5 has a high enough flow rate on a tank that size that if it is not catching the particles and the 405 isn't as well, adding an AC110 probably won't do much.

don't get me wrong - AC110's are great for mechanical filtration.

but you need to look at the source of the problem here. you have plenty of filtration on the tank already.

what is the stocking of the tank, feeding schedule, how often are you changing water etc?

this sounds like more of a stocking or maintainence issue rather than a filtration issue.

also pics of the tank might help too.

but in general, cloudy water is often from either too much food (ie overfeeding) or too much stock (too much waste) that creates a bacterial bloom that gives the water a milky appearence.

this can be cleared up with reduced feeding/and or stocking and increased water changes.

Agree, the tank is over filtered already, if not "over kill".

Check your water parameters.

Also, fx5 polishing pad have been know to create micro bubbles, many go without polishing pads.

stock is 9" oscar, 5" JD, 5" Red Devil, 4" CK, 9" pleco, 8" Senegal, 3" blood parrot. feedings are 4 masivore pellets (2 for the oscar and 1 ea. JD and RD) and a handful of the medium carnivore hikari pellets and the CK gets a cube of blood worms. this is done after work every night. i am doing 25% WC 3-4 times per week, the tank has been running for a month now... some pics to follow thanks for the input so far

If its only been running a month and you have all those fish in it, i think your problem is ammonia and youre still cycling. Is the water kind of white hazy?

no all the parameters are fine most of the ceramic and a few sponges are from the 55 they where in prior to the upgrade. i guess the bb didnt take as well as i thought it would and the cheap petco test kit kinda sucks... im gonna try my hand at posting pics for the first time. I guess it may be from not cycling yet since im doing so many water changes to avoid the tank smelling up the living room. no water change for 3 days= dont sit in the living room.

Any water polishing media added to your current setup will help with particulate, but I think BradT85 may be right... Thats a lot of bio-load & it takes a while to build enough bacteria to support it. Your WC schedule is great, but are your ammo & nitrites at staying at zero?

Whats your nitrate and phosphate level? Have you ever tested your tap water for either?

With all the direct light from the window, you might be getting some free floating algae in the water...if this is the case, an UV unit may help.

What was your stock list in the 55? If you increased the bioload in the 125 significantly, the seeded media from the 55 might not be able to keep up, which means you would see some ammonia and/or nitrite in the water.

nitrites and nitrates both reading 0, ph is 6.5 out of ammo strips gotta run to the store as usual i guess
