AC Biomax or 2 filter sponges?

Hi,
I've always used 2 sponges as the filter media for my aquaclears and now I was wondering whether for my next setup I should have 1 sponge and the biomax insert instead of the extra sponge. Would this be an improvement on my regular method of just having 2 sponges?

I prefer the biomax or similar for biofiltration. The biomax is easily rinsed of in tank water. Whereas the sponges get pretty gunked up and require a good cleaning with hot tap water, they are get for mechanical filtration though.

yea, i personally run 2 ac110's on my 75g with my big midas. one has the big sponge at the bottom and the rest is filled with the biomax rings, the other has 2 small sponges side by side(they were out of an ac70) with polishing pads and two bags of the biomax on top(main purpose is to keep polishing pads from floating away). it works great and keeps my water crystal clear in with a massive fish
