I've searched the forums, seen the reviews, constantly read the arguments and votes.
But sticks in my mind...
I have several tanks all with Penguin or canister filters. Want to add another power filter to my 55 which currently has a penguin 330B. I'm debating about adding a penguin 200B or maybe an AC50. But since all my filters (for the most part) are already penguin (and penguins that use same size filter too ;) for simplier maintance and shopping) so how and why would I want to go and try the AC50 and having to buy another seperate media or what not, when I could easily go with the penguin and continue using same media and cartridges?

My suggestion would be to stick with what you already have. I have a new AC 20 and an OLD Penguin 125 Bio-wheel. Personally I like the bio-wheel better because of the cartridge, which collects all types of gunk. Simply pull it out, clean it off and back into the filter. Also it has wonderful biological filtration with the bio wheel. With my AC 20, it is small, does a great job for biological filtration but the mechanical filtration is very lacking, especially with the media that it comes with. Of course you could change that, but really personal preferrence.

With the AC you dont have to buy replacement media. Rinse the sponge that comes with it and leave the biomax alone and you're fine. I have AC filters that have had the same media for a couple of years.

You dont have to buy replacement media for the penguins either, I never have. Like i said, pull the cartridge out, rinse it out, good to go.

I usually rinse about every other cleaning (I do a partial water change and 1/2gravel vac 1x per week) and then change the media about 1x every few months...

If AC stopped making filters I would quit. LOL

if you get an ac just dont bump it on the tank or anything. I have all penguins 330s ,and thought i would try the ac500 to change things up abit. Well,i still have my penguins after several years and as for as that ac500. After a few months the motor started making a grinding noise so i took it out the tanks to check it out, bumped it on the coner or the tanks and busted the whole back of the filter out. WHAT A MESS. Had to get a penguin 350 to replace it and well,im now changing out the 330s out with 350s.
This is just My experience with the 2 filters,i even tried the EMP400 and did not like it,(would not siphon after the power went out)
Anyway, after telling a few people about this seems im not the only one that had the same problem. seems the acs or mad with cheep plastic or something. It did not take a hard lick to bust it either
Again, this is just me, I say, stay with what works for you, don't fix whats not broke...
