That's what I do with my 2x A.C. 110's. I stuffed 4 additional mesh bags with more ceramic bio media. Some ditch the ceramic media and add more sponges.
I run three on my 180g. I cut the sponge to half the thickness and then stuffed the rest with biomax. I prefer the fx5/6 biomax than what comes with the ac110 as that one crumbles very easily.
Attaching a sponge on the intake tube is a very good option, allowing for more surface area for BB, as well as acting as a strainer. A technique often used by breeders.
