Would there be too much turbulence in the water? Would it even fit on the lip of the tank?

Yes it will fit. Too much turbulance??
Well, I have 2 AC70's = 600gph as opposed to 500gph for the 110, on a 29, and I don't think it's too much at all.
But..............I tend to over filter.
I like the fact of having 2 smaller filters even though the GPH may be more, for redundacy issues. I even have a AC301 powerhead with quick filter in the tank as well.

I've had an AC110/500 on a 29 gallon, it was fine for goldfish and a jack dempsey.

think of it this way..... on MFK, you can never have too much filteration

Turbulence can be an issue with some fish such as bettas and angelfish.

I had one on a 20 gal long, just keep the water level a bit higher so theres more surface agitaition.

As long as it's not a Glasscage tank it will. In regards to turbulence make sure to have good aquascaping w/ plenty of refuge for them to hide/rest, if there is any doubt.
