I have a 29g sitting around, and I've had my eye on German Blue Rams for a while. I'm thinking of doing a sand substrate with my existing lava rock and maybe a hardy plant or two. Right now lighting is going to be ghetto: The hood light that came with my lid, something like 18 watts. I do have a a few metal reflector fixtures, and might toss a few CFLs in them to boost the lighting until I get something bigger/invest in some real lighting.

I want to reduce the flow of my AC110 somehow, enough that it's not going to torment some CRS/RCS (shrimp) if possible. The tank would have 2 rams and a handful of shrimp. I'm debating (from bottom of filter up) doing:

SPONGE/BIO/BIO
or
SPONGE/SPONGE/BIO

inside of my filter. I haven't used carbon in it in a while, and just toss a bag on the water outlet for a bit if I have to use medication etc.

Suggestions? I'd put a foam prefilter on as well to keep shrimp from getting sucked up.

Just started a 29 myself with 3F's and 1 male Blue Ram and a couple of harlequins...and of course a bushynose pleco. I have 2-AC50's on there. Love the AC's. I am always looking for them for sale. Think the 110 may be alot for the CRS...

That's what I'm thinking too. I do have a 10g sitting around as well with an AC30, but I'm not sure if I want to maintain 2 tanks right now. 1 is a lot of fun and a conversation piece (I'm in college) so people all love checking it out, but 2 is a bit overkill for the size of my room.

i like the idea of an overkill fitration, but 110 on a 29 gallon might be a bit much lol. Your plants prob will get uprooted every time and the sand will be washed up.

I've had it on the tank for over a year, and as long as the tank is kept full, the current isn't bad. I also had some plants but got sick of maintaining them. I'm most worried about going gravel to sand
