Well, this morning I woke up to find that my brand new (1 day old) AC110 has stopped working just like my Marineland Penguin 350 that died out of the blue... sand is the reason both these filters have stopped working and the culprit is my lovely albino Red Zebra. He just recently thought it would be nice to drop the sand he scoops out of his cave directly onto the intake of the filter. Luckily he leaves the inexpensive one that has been on the 55gal the whole time, alone.

I suppose a prefilter is the only way to save these things right?

Sigh...

Yup. Cut a slit down the center of an AC50 or AC70 foam block & slide it over the intake. If thats not fine enough to catch your sand I think Rena makes a finer foam...

I use a prefilter from a magdrive 2 pump. It fits perfect over the intake of an Aquaclear 110 or 70.

reminds me of finding nemo when they were trying to escape the tank.

lmao , they can be vindictive if hungry or bored which most Africans are both always :) Just throw a sponge on it and you should be alright.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I managed to solve the problem by raising the intake tube. The AC110 comes with an extender tube that I was using and I thought I would be okay. Boy was I wrong... I would love to take apart the Marineland 350, but the pump isn't detachable, what a waste of money. When it comes to filters it's better just to suck it up and spend the money on something that works right the first time.
