Hey fellow MFK'ers!

What have you all had success keeping long term with adonis? I don't want his trailers getting nipped at! I am going to be setting up my new grow out tank within the next 2 months or so. It is a standard 240 (96"x 24"x 25") and the only other "for sure" tank mate is going to be a Megalodoras uranoscopus.

Would any other pleco species be recomended? I know adonis can get quite territorial when larger, and I'd rather not have to deal with constant squabbling amongst my specimens. Having said that, the tank has a relatively decent footprint (though it is only a grow out for the adonis!), so do you all think that with multiple hides and visual barriers I would be able to do one or two different Pseudacanthicus? What about a gibby?

Are there any interesting mid water fish that would be sociable (again, no trailer nipping) with the adonis and the urano? I've been toying with the idea of a specimen prochilodus. On a bit if a separate note, has anyone had any experience keeping Polypterus (specifically endlicheri) with adonis? Having a bit of floor space to work with, I would really like to do some poly's. I have kept several over the years and know they are generally quite peaceful with anything that isn't bite sized. But back to the issue of nipped trailers, do you all think poly's would leave them alone, or would having them waved around their faces elicit a feeding response?

Oh the woes of matching species! :nilly:

I have always kept flagtails with mine. They work great IMO. Right now I have my small Adonis with Geo's and the seem to be a great mix. They completely ignore each other. I had chocolates, Pearsei and bocourti but got rid of them because they all nipped the trailers.

I've been seriously considering a Prochilodus, so that may just have to happen now. Also, thanks for the word on the Geo's, I've been eyeing G. altifrons for quite some time!

Any other interesting large fish you could recommend? And any suggestions as far as the Polypterus go?

Never kept an Adonis (I'd like to at some point though) but from my experience my Gibby doesn't tolerate any other plecos with him. He took down a whiptail cat slowly over a few months and I wasn't aware it was serious until it was to late.

Well I hope that level of aggression isn't expressed with my specimen. They are known to be quite aggressive once they hit the 12-15" mark and near sexual maturity, but this is prodominatly limited to protecting their chosen "cave".

I plan on having at least six 8" diameter PVC tubes halved to make sure there is ample room for the Megalodoras to stay out of the adonis' tube. I find it interesting though that adonis are known to choose a hide, and keep it for an extended period of time; often defending it aggressively. I'm thinking about adding the adonis first with just one hide for him to claim as his own before adding more tubes and the uranoscopus.

Questions, comments, concerns?!

I have a 3" adonis in my 90 gallon with like 40 BNs, L24,L134,L143,L114, 2 L386, L190,L191, and a few others, I haven't had a problem with it being aggressive at least not yet and it was one of the last plecos added to the tank to grow out a bit, before it goes into the 240 gallon big boy tank.
