Hey guys,
I've been told that if I keep my water change schedule, (20% every 3 days) my discus will only grow to about 4-5 inches. Is this an acceptable full size or should I step it up to 25% every 2 days or like 10% every day?

Less nitrates the more growth , check ur levels keep at 20ppm max. 0-10 ideal

Too many variables, need more info. 20% every 3 days in a 90 gallon tank with 5-6 discus you will be just fine growing them to 5-6". 20% every 3 days in a 29 gallon with 3-4 discus they will be stunted for sure.

What size is your tank, how many fish, what's your feeding schedule?

Ok, 7 discus in a 55 can be grown to full size but you will have to step up water changes. I grow out 12 discus in 55s from 3" fish to 5" but did 70% water change every day.

I would suggest at least 50% every other day to get them to full potential, more the better. You're trying to get rid of nitrates and waste with water changes, so as much as you can remove would be in the best interest of the fish.

Tank is sand substrate, moderately planted. What I think I'll do know guys is this: for an all day foraging food ill add black worms in the morning. Then some beef heart flakes, and then some pellets to finish the day. Then bloodworms and brine shrimp a a twice weekly treat. For water changes:
I'll buy a 40 gallon Rubbermaid bucket, and keep it full of water at all times. (Treated water, how I make it to refill the tank) ill add a heater to this, and do 25% every day. Does this sound good?

Sounds like a plan :)

If you use treated tap water for your tank a easy way to do more and often water changes is to get a Python. It hooks up to a sink, sucks and puts water back in thru the same hose. Get yourself some Prime or Safe and just dose the tap water as you refill the tank. That's how I do my water changes in tap water tanks for years. It'll save you time and space, allow you to do bigger volume of WC in less time. Just make sure to make the refill water close to same temp as tank water.

IMHO fish size has very little to do with water changes. It's all about the food quality, quantity and frequency of feeding and the genetics of the fish. To achieve optimum size given the genetics of the fish, the water changes has to match the quantity and frequency. The more quantity and frequency of feeding the more water changes are required. Another factor to consider is the density of stocking in the tank. More dense means more water changes, too. To recap, it depends on several important factors and you match those factors with the requisite water changes, which is the incidental factor, the other factors being more important.

your better off doing one 50% wc every other day than one 25% every day. I agree on the python. I change 70% of my 120 gal. tank in about 30 minutes.
