Right now I have a tank of brackish fish that are in freshwater, all of the fish were being kept in freshwater and that is what I put them in when I bought them. I now have a tank that I would like to make brackish that has all brackish fish in it. I want to know how to make this tank brackish.

I have heard that when doing water changes add 1 tsp per gallon. I have measured that it takes 1/2 cup per gallon to make brackish water.

The tank is 33 gallons and if I do a 10% water change every other day, I am only supposed to add 3 teaspoons? To me that seems like it would be many months before the tank became brackish.

I have been adding 1/3rd of a cup per gallon every other day when I do my 3 gallon water changes (So I add a total of 1 cup during water changes). The salinity in the tank still hasn't changed. The fish don't seem to care about this either.

A teaspoon per gallon every 4 - 6 hours is fine.
Then every time you do a water change replace what you've taken out (obvious - sorry).

But if they're happy in Fresh then there's no rush is there? You wont notice a change in the behaviour.

If your tank is 33 gallons, then it will be brackish when you've added about 16 cups - yes?
So then if you change 10% you have removed 1.6 cups of salt, so you put back 1.6 cups.
You take 10% of the salt out with 10% of the water, so that's what you replace.

Brackish varies a lot but is usually 10 teaspoons per gallon?? If so then I would add 1 teaspoon per gallon every few hours till you're brackish, then continue with the water changes.
