How do you acclimate your fish? I have been told by two different wholesalers put them in to the new tank as soon as they arrive. Others say do it slowly. what do you do and why? Thank you
For... what specifically? If it is a captive bred local fish, the breeders params and mine should be very similar, so I float and drop. If they come from farther away, haven't been acclimated to the local water or are wild caught, I drip acclimate for 6 hours.
Thanks for the reply. I was not very clear. I was told by these breeders to quickly remove the fish from the foul shipping water into clean water as fast as you are able. The danger of leaving the fish in waste water that has been opened to the air out weighs any danger in clean water with different tolerance's I am not saying they are right or wrong just wondering what you do.
If they're shipped fish you can squirt some Prime into the bag as soon as you open the bag to detoxify the ammonia. The ammonia doens't become toxic until the bag is opened and exposed to air. I usually put shipped fish in a bucket and acclimnate over the course of 30-45 minutes or so. I did my tank-bred Discus that way, too, and they did just wonderful. I was a little worried about them because they came from kh 2 water and my water is kh 14. But they were up swiming around and eating within an hour. I'm not saying the way I do it is right, but that's my way.
