Picked these two up 6 hours ago. They were sold to me as acestrorhynchus falcatus (red tail barracuda) but after they were introduced into my tank I started thinking they look more like acestrorhynchus altus (pantaneiro). One is roughly 6.5" the other is around 5.5". Regardless of the sub species I'm happy to have them. Fingers crossed that I don't run into any tail rot issues. Aquarium is 72x18x24 temperature 80f. Feel free to let me know if my tank isnt big enough or if the temperature should be adjusted. I am planning to buy one more to make a group.

Likely they are falcatus. More than 90% brought in are these. Where did you get them from?

I know altus are harder to come by. Pic two Apon closer examination of the tail you can see it rounds before it forks when falcatus is a straight fork. Correct me if I am wrong since am no expert with species. I seen this difference by using photos as reference. I got these local about an hour from Me. If they are altus I would prefer not to express the location in public. Intill I by 3 more lol. There are about 11 left for sale.

Lol....I understand that you want to keep the location secret. I would say this that there very subtle differences between them. If you got it from an lfs then likely regular cuda. If you got it from a vendor then likely Altus. The differences that have been mentioned prior have been the lack of deep red and the deeper the body is on the fish. Humeral spot is a different shaped compared to falcaltus. Collection points. The other is scales along the lateral which the range is off. Also the lack of the hooked face. The tail hasn't been mentioned prior from what I've read. Will look into it.

Just trying to find out.

I'm not sure how to tell them apart myself. But the altus from Argentina have only been exported a couple of times to the US recently and it was by myself. All other ones are not from Argentina. Most come from Peru

Those are pretty beefy, look better than most of the ones I have seen which are mostly really thin, nice pick up!
