I got a small one of these guys acouple days ago, is there anything special I should know about them?

They do better in groups of ateast 3. They are very skittish and stress easily, more so when not in a school. They get fin and tail rot and ick very easily because of that stress. The key to keeping this fish alive is to let it acclimate and keep it from getting stressed. And get it eating asap. They take live foods like minnows and guppies. They also will not tolerate ammonia, so they must have a completly cycled tank.---------So basically they are a harder fish to keep and not a entry level fish by any means, But they are a very cool predater that does not get very big. I have tried to keep this fish a few times long ago and i did not have what it took. There is a very informal write up on a site called water wolves under the characins section. check it out.

I thought about buying a second, as they had two. but the other was alot smaller an appeared to be missing a bit of its lower jaw. I had seen it eat while in the store, an have witnessed it take down a guppy an a jumbo mysis shrimp, I was surprised to see it go after the shrimp.

Was the shrimp live or dead/frozen?? either way it is a good sign that hes open to other foods.

It is best to get off live foods by starving him for 1 week at a time and then add maybe 4-5 guppies.

Since some of the problems were brought up, a way to cure Ich is med-high Temp (82-85*) and aquarium salt. DO YOUR BEST TO STAY AWAY FROM MEDS.
I think they reach a max of 14" or so and my experience is they dont swim to much (maybe because he was solo).

Shrimp was frozen, he just ate more of it a few min ago to :nilly:. I tend to keep all my tanks between 80-85, an add salt with every water change/cleaning. I typically only give Meds to feeders when I first get them. Ya mine sortve stays in a open area an moves in short bursts.

Cool, that means he is a very confidant one. The last one I have didnt get used to the tank for about a week, then I kicked him to the curb.

Sounds like you got it undr control:D

Thats not an Ace. Its a Pike Odoe
Sweet fish, Id rather own 1 Odoe that 100 red tail Aces...JMO
Odoes only live for about 5yrs and grow fairly quick to 15"

here is a pic of a red tail Ace and a Pike Odoe:D

The give away is the jaw structure and the scales, black spots on his tail, black cadual fin... 100% sure it is a baby Odoe.
Hard to get in some states bro.
Nice pick up
I was suprised how fast he was able to addapt to your tank and eat non live foods. Aces are weak fish to me. Swim little, just hover in one place and are very very did I mention very hard to get off live foods and are weak fish. They can almost die from looking at the to long.
Odoes are strong fish and can get aggressive, but it depends on charecter

Hope you are happy with him cause you can always ship him to me:naughty:
