OH
I am thinking of getting either an Achara or Tigrinus catfish that would ultimately end up being housed in a 8' X 3' X 3' with mild mannered central and south american cichlids. I don't want something that will hide all day, require live food or grow too large to be comfortable in this tank. Would you recommend the Archara or Tigrinus...or something else? thanks

Tigrinus or a juruenese catfish would be better. Acharas hit the 2'+ mark really fast.

I'd do a Jur. Acharas will easily get 24" and at that size would have about a 30-36" barbel span which is really what you need to think about when determining tank size for the long barbeled pimelodids.

Go with the false Tig. Awesome fish, cheaper then tigs and won't get too big for your tank.

Edit: when I say cheaper I mean much cheaper;)

Yeah, juruense tend to cost roughly a whole zero less than a tig.

Plus, while they look like crap as a whole when little, they tend to color up very nicely after a foot in length or so. I'm probably the odd man out here, but I actually prefer them to a tig. They're something of a 'diamond in the rough'. :)

juruenese catfish +1

My Tig stopped hiding after it got to be about a foot long. I agree the Achara will get too large because of the barbells. The Jur is wayyyyyy cheaper but I don't think nearly the stunner. I used to say my tig was the most boring / beautiful fish I ever owned but since it has gotten some size and confidence it's pretty cool and swims around in the open, lights or not. I measured the other day and it's 15" now. I got it in March of 2013 at about 3", so they grow reasonably fast.

IMHO, 3' width is too small to house a tig for life. Both achara and tig reach roughly the same length, just at a different rate. I'd look into medium Pims an Heptapterids (1.5' and under). Ramdia quelen fits the biotope.
