Where Palm Trees Grow
I just got this Ackie in the mail last tuesday and i've put him in a 40g breeder with basking temps of 125-130 and ambient temps at 85-90. I live in Florida and it is winter time and it's about 40 degrees outside and about 70 in my garage but not his tank. He has been sleeping about 11 and a half hours out of the day, I try to catch him awake so I can feed him but if I wake him up he won't eat. Is he hibernating because of the temperatures outside?

is he sleeping under the basking light or sleeping in hides? Did you put the top over the screen ? If not then all the warm air is escaping (heat rising) like we spoke about in the pm. Ackies dont hibernate, but will slow down if they feel temps are not optimal. Just leave food in there, you dont need to be watching him while he eats and you certainly dont need to wait till he wakes up to feed him.. Toss crickets in dusted with calcium d3 powder and leave pinky pcs. Baby monitors sleep alot more than adults by nature and they spend 90% of their time hiding.

Yesterday he just chilled on his basking log under the light then he moved to the far corner of the tank which is the coldest. But now he moved back on the log.

Oh and I have tin foil covering 3/4 of the tank but I have not added newspaper yet which I will tape to the 3 sides right now. And I will tape a larger piece of tin foil over since this one is not completely covering the edges of the lid.

I just got another lamp with a regular 75 watt house bulb to keep the ambient temp up and I threw about 7 crickets in there and he ate four and I bought some ground turkey to save a little money. But now the temps are great and he seems happier and more active.

Wow but watch out, dont overheat your lizard! I think you need a good termostat just to make shure.

how hot will overheat a baby close to the op's size?

Overkill on the lighting man, if the tank is cooling down like that then you need to find a way to insolate the tank because of it being in the garage. I'd put some styrofoam on the bottom of tank and on three sides to keep the temps steady, and prevent fast fluctuations. I would also cover the entire top and place the heating element inside the enclosure if the height permits. Once the cold fron leaves and temps are stable then you can remove the lamp and place back on top.
