Didn't see it Brian. But will answer Ryan75.

When outcrossing; either between breeds (such as Rottweiler x St. Bernard dogs) or species (such as FireMouth Cichlid and Texas Cichlid) the first generation is referred to as the 1st filial generation, ie, F1. When the F1 are bred together it is referred to as inter-se and the offspring of that cross are called F2. And so on. If you were to breed an F1 back to the parent breed or species the offspring are referred to as P1.

The terminology definition does NOT contain the word sibling. What I mean by that is if you did 2 seperate crosses between Platy and Swordtail using 4 individuals, then crossed the offspring to each other, it is still referred to as an F2 cross.

The presumption when using these terms is that a certain trait(s) is either being tested or transferred. Not an absolute presumption, but certainly implied.

^^

Captain, that might be correct in certain context. However in fish keeping, F0 means wild caught. F1 would be a fish with wild caught parents. F2 is wild caught grandparents, etc.

An example is an Oscar from Wal-Mart is likely F9230.

Give it a go.

Brian, not sure how to reply! I understand that if that is a term being used, but it GREATLY confounds the methods of science. A perfect example is the thread I started on Eectric Blue Jack Dempsey's. If we are not able to use accepted scientific terms and methods, we will never solve the basic breeding questions that exist. I know from experience that confusion of terminology is a big part of misunderstanding, therefore failure to untangle.
