Acrylic aquariums?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well i dont own an acrylic aquarium, but truvue.com and aquariumsource. com are good, with a cheaper price. they claim to use the highest acrylic which would be cell cast technology. remember with your custom measurments the price goes up big time when you get taller then 18". most of the downsides in acrylic are that they use 3/8" acrylic with anything under 125 gallons standard. to me 125 gallons is a lot of pressure and it would be a lot less likely to aquire stress fractures with thicker acrylic. may i ask what your going to put in it as far as fish? fresh or salt?

I swear by Tru-Vue as well. Good quality and clarity; but just be careful as all acrylics will scratch more easily than glass.

We know about acrylic as our 370g is acrylic. It does have scratches, but they really don't distract from viewing or the overall look of the tank.

I don't like glass, since its alot heavier and can break alot easier.

We will be using it for freshwater. Just getting an idea of prices compared to what we paid 10 years ago. Just doing some research.

lol 10 years is along time and advances have been huge in that amount of time. as with alot of things the facts speak loudy. 10:1 are happy with the new types of acrylics for many reasons. cheack out tru-vue first, i think you will be happy. if you wanted to stick with a standard tank then you will more then likely find the show tanks cheaper. standard dimensions apply. otherwise remember that higher then 18" gets pricey.

Thanks. We most likely will get something higher then 18". I like high aquariums and wider also. I won't go with anything less then 30" high. Not saying I wouldn't buy a normal size aquarium for a good price. But, If I'm buying another monster tank I will stick with wider/taller then normal.

I'd like to get something larger then our 370g.

Iv'e never had an acrylic tank and I'm curious what are some of the advantages/disadvantages compared to glass?

Glass scratches much less then an acrylic tank, a fish such as a cat fish can scratch up an acrylic tank pretty bad. The clarity of a glass tank is generally less the acrylic, though you can get what they call saphire glass which is mind blowing clear. The weight of the acrylic tank is much less, and less chance of leaks because the tank walls are fused together. harder to clean a acrylic because inside you can't use just anything, outside you can't use glass cleaner. no hard objects should touch the acrylic.

also to add what has been mentioned already. acrylic bows more if it is imporperly sized. this causes what is known as crayzing. small little cracks inside the acrylic. they dont leak right away but once you get them theirs no getting rid of them. also if the acrylic bows more then you can also get stress cracks. these are similar to the crayzing cracks but are more prone to leaking right away. also usually accurs in the middle of the sheat due to an air bubble. saphir glass is mind blowing and if you have the money for it, you would probably end up paying as much on a glass as an acrylic.

370 gallons is a lot of water and a 30" high tank is going to be pricey. they look cool the taller they get and you dont seem to mind cleaning them lol.

Yes, we paid around $5,000 for tank, canopy/stand, internal filter, shipping. We love it and would love to have another acrylic tank. I can't imagine hauling a glass tank larger then a 180g. I like the fact that it won't bust or leak etc. Ours is fused together and thick. It won't be bowing. But, It all depends on size of tank and thickness of acrylic etc.
