have an opportunity to spend $20 per 24”x24” sheet of acrylic 1/4 THICK On clearance so it will be 5 sheets at $100 to build an acrylic or 6 for $120 with better top coverage (cat proofed) the thicker is more forgiving for a newbie like me is my reasoning or am I just going overboard on this thickness at this size?

Quarter inch acrylic shouldn't really be used for anything over 12" tall. And you will want to ask who the manufacturer is and if it's cast or extruded acrylic so you don't get completely useless junk.

What dimension tank are you building? 24"x24"x24"?

that was what I was thinking but with M1 advice i will steer clear

it is actually extruded acrylic and will reconsider not doing it over 12” but doing it exactly 12”x12” cube style? Just for practice

12”x12” cube tank with smaller piece of acrylic thats $5 per12x12 sheet to practice with- it will be $25 with 5 sheets? 6th sheet for bracing purpose $30 ?

Who is the manufacturer?

I would generally not use extruded acrylic for an aquarium. It might be suitable for sumps, frag tanks, and for experimenting or getting used to working with acrylic. Extruded machines differently than cast acrylic so getting the flat and sharp edge you need for solvent welding is a pain in the butt. Extruded bows more than cast too so you need thicker material for the same size tank.

Also not the greatest deal. 1/4” cast acrylic pre BS covid sneeze guards cost about $125/sheet. If you want to maximize gallons per sheet build a 4x2x16” tall. If you want maximum length with most gallons build a 7x1x1. Largest cube 2x2x2
. Assuming a top brace with cutouts.
