How thick of a piece of acrylic will I need for a 400 gallon.

DImensions about 8 feet long, 24 inches high.

I'm gonna break down my pond and place a glass or acrylic sheet in the front and convert the tank to straight monsters. :D

acrylic i would say 3/4 inch glass at least 1 inch thick

It needs to be cell cast acrylic. It's the only kind that will last over time. And no, plexi does not equal acrylic.

oh I just found this quote on that web site they agree:

Once you have an idea of the size of your future tank, and the amount of acrylic you'll need, the next step is locating a plastic supplier. Look in the Yellowpages under "plastics", if you live in a large city you should find several suppliers, if not, you may have to check your nearest large city for listings. YOU MUST USE "CELL-CAST" ACRYLIC SHEET, THIS CANNOT BE OVEREMPHASIZED! Try several different suppliers, you'll be surprised how the price varies, and MAKE SURE to ask if they include cutting in the price~trust me, you do not want to attempt the cuts yourself, except cutting out the lids & plumbing holes.

acrylic is much stronger than glass (it can flex), but has the down side of being 'easily' scratchable. As for the thickness, water preasure varies with depth and depth alone (2 lbs/in^2 per foot depth - if I remeber corectly). so for a two foot deep tank the preasure is much less per square inch than it is for a three foot deep tank. That is how people can make huge tanks (12ftx6ftx2ft) and only use 1/2 inch arcylic.
