I recently recieved a 90g acrylic aquarium and was going to house a small (4-5") black rhom (piranha) in it as a growout tank. However, these fish tend to rub against the side of the aquarium when you approach the tank. Would this do damage to the acrylic? Is it a bad idea to house this fish in this tank?

There is a possibility that inhabitants can scratch the acrylic on the tank if they have any sharp claws, teeth, or shells. Depends if the fish is hitting it with its teeth but if its just the side I don't see it happening.

Also you mentioned it is a grow out tank. In the event that it does get scratched, acrylic is easier to repair with a kit. You can do this after you move the fish into its permanent home!

90g growout for a rhom? thats more like a permanent home....

More of a temp home than a growout. I didn't know what else to call it. He's going in a 100g custom tank when I can get it back from my brother. I know it would suit him for life, I just want him in the 100 eventually.

oh okay, anyways i really dont thing the rhom will be to bad in an acrylic tank but like duggan said, nothing that cant be fixed

Not all of them rub. At small sizes most hide. Once they get bigger, and bolder, you might make them finger chase a lot and make them rub and crash into the tank.

But do you think that this would noticeably damage the acrylic? Bubba is a sexy beast by the way.

won't damage the tank, usually they rub their chin against the tank (soft skin tissue) and grows that infamous chimple....
