I want to make an acrylic overhead sump and wondering what thickness acrylic I should use. It will be about 36” L x 6” wide and 8” tall ( about 7.5 gallons) I have very little experience with acrylic so this will be my first.

1/4" thick should be plenty strong and work well for the proposed dimensions. good size to start playing with on a 1st project.

Would any bracing be needed for that thickness of acrylic? Is anything thinner possible or is 1/4 the thinnest I should go?

Being ur 1st project in acrylic...id def. use 1/4"...to save money u can prob. sneak by with 3/32". 1/4" is usually never a full 1/4" so same difference. since ur building an overhead sump ur basically bracing it with ur divisions, that should be enough for extra support. if any sections of the sump bow outward after a water test u can always add in some small top braces.

If ur cutting material urself...1/4" goes alot smoother on a table saw with a decent blade. The thinner guages around 1/8" will chip out and make for bad/unattractive seams.

wednesday13 wednesday13 on the money here I agree wit him

Are you going capillary welding or using wires/pins? Solvents? #40?

Be sure to use cell cast not extruded materials, I would recommend any Arkema brand product. A lot of distributors will cut the sheets for you at a minimal charge, you can then just router or joiner the edges smooth for assembly.

I’m gonna call a couple local plastics places tomorrow to price a 1/4” sheet and will see how much extra they charge to cut it. If not I’ll do it myself. Anybody know ballpark how much a 1/4” sheet of acrylic will cost?

From my limited research I figured I would go with capillary welding. It didn’t seem like one was necessarily better than the other on this small of a project? Pls correct me if I’m wrong tho.

I've seen it at $8 / square foot for 1/4", but that obviously was just one place.

It’s $140 for a 48x96 piece of 1/4” acrylic but I don’t think I need a piece that big

Are these cuts right for a 36” L x 6” w x 8” T sump?

Bottom piece 36x6
Front and back : 36 x 7 3/4
Sides : 7 3/4 x 5 1/2
